How Do Braces Work?

Here at Shine Orthodontics, we love it when our patients have questions! Dr. McGrogan and the team are passionate about what we do, and we love getting the chance to let you know what your treatment options are, what to expect during treatment, and how they work! So sit back, relax, and let’s get to learning about how braces work.

Common Orthodontic Issues and Their Treatment

Braces have long been recognized as a reliable solution for addressing various dental problems. These include issues like overbites, underbites, crooked teeth, and gaps between teeth. Each of these conditions can impact the alignment of your teeth and, consequently, your overall oral health.

Overbites and underbites occur when the upper and lower teeth do not meet properly when you close your mouth. Braces help correct these issues by gently guiding your teeth into the correct positions, allowing for a harmonious bite. This not only enhances your smile but also improves your ability to chew and speak comfortably.

Crooked teeth are a common concern that braces effectively address. They can affect the aesthetics of your smile and, in some cases, even lead to dental health issues. Braces work by applying consistent pressure to gradually move misaligned teeth into their proper places, creating a beautifully aligned smile.

Gaps between teeth, also known as diastema, can occur due to various reasons, such as genetics or thumb-sucking habits. Braces are highly effective in closing these gaps by gently bringing the teeth closer together. This not only improves the appearance of your smile but also prevents potential dental issues that may arise from gaps between teeth.

The Mechanics of Braces

Understanding how braces work involves delving into their intricate components. At the core of braces are brackets and wires, which play a fundamental role in guiding your teeth toward their ideal positions.

Brackets are small but sturdy pieces, often made from materials like stainless steel and nickel. Dr. McGrogan selects durable brackets to ensure the effectiveness of your orthodontic treatment. These brackets feature hooks or doors through which a wire is threaded. The wire, thinner than you might expect, connects one bracket to another, serving as the guide for tooth movement.

Elastics, also known as rubber bands, come into play when bite correction is necessary. These tiny bands connect upper and lower brackets, applying the necessary pressure to address overbites or underbites. Dr. McGrogan may also strategically use rubber bands for other purposes, exerting extra pressure where needed to achieve optimal results.

Orthodontic bands, often called “braces bands,” are stainless steel rings cemented to your teeth. They serve as anchors for braces and other orthodontic appliances. While not required for every patient, orthodontic bands are crucial when specific dental conditions need additional support.

Before applying bands, spacers, also known as elastic “donuts” or rings, may be used to create space between your teeth. This preparation ensures a smoother alignment process and helps braces work more effectively.

Personalization is a fun aspect of braces, allowing you to showcase your unique style. Elastic ties, also known as o-rings, are used to attach the archwire to the brackets. These tiny rubber rings come in a wide array of colors, providing an opportunity for you to personalize your braces with your favorite hues.

The Orthodontic Treatment Journey

The orthodontic treatment journey is a carefully planned and executed process. Before any brackets find their place, our team conducts a comprehensive analysis. This may include taking photos, X-rays, and, in some cases, employing advanced 3D scans with our iTero Element scanner. This thorough evaluation, taking around 10-15 minutes, provides a highly accurate 3D view of your mouth.

Dr. McGrogan uses this wealth of information to craft your personalized treatment plan. This plan determines how each tooth needs to be moved for your best results. It’s a crucial step that works to make sure your orthodontic journey directly addresses your unique dental needs.

Once we’ve developed your treatment plan with the help of cutting-edge orthodontic technology, Dr. McGrogan will place the brackets. The placement varies based on your specific requirements. For instance, brackets for tilted teeth differ from those for teeth needing rotation. Once the brackets are in place, the wire is inserted. The bends in the wire are where the magic happens, applying precise pressure to guide your teeth into their desired positions.

Understanding the careful planning and techniques behind your orthodontic treatment helps ensure that your experience is both effective and comfortable. Dr. McGrogan and our team are dedicated to providing you with the best possible care throughout your journey to a healthier, happier smile.

The Best Age for Braces

Are you looking for a great place to get braces for your little one? How about your teen? Or, maybe you’re a grownup. Perhaps you could use some braces yourself? Dr. McGrogan and the rest of our Shine Orthodontics team can help! We’re here for everyone around Holly Springs. So, what’s the best age for braces?

A Sparkling Start: Braces for Kids

Imagine your child’s smile as a blooming flower. It’s just about ready to shine. But when’s the right time to nurture that smile with braces? At Shine Orthodontics, we believe in catching the sunbeam early; age seven is the magic number!

By age seven, your child’s teeth have grown enough to give us a sneak peek into how their smile might develop. This age is like a window of opportunity. It allows Dr. McGrogan and our team to spot quirks that might need attention. It’s not about rushing into braces but understanding the landscape of your child’s smile.

Early evaluations are like a treasure hunt for your child’s future smile. They allow us to address minor problems before they become significant challenges. Maybe your child’s teeth are having a crowded party in their mouth. Or, their jaw is growing faster than a sprouting beanstalk (which led to a giant problem for Jack). Whatever the case, early evaluation helps us steer these issues in the right direction.

Starting orthodontic care early can be an exciting adventure for your child. At Shine Orthodontics, we turn this into a fun-filled quest. We offer colorful bands, fun shapes, and a team always ready to cheer them on. We make the experience enjoyable and engaging. It’s not just about straightening teeth. It’s about building confidence, understanding, and excitement about oral health.

We know parents are the superheroes in their children’s lives. And we’re here to be your sidekicks. We’ll walk you through every step. We’ll answer all your questions to make certain you and your child feel comfortable and informed. Together, we’ll create a roadmap to a smile that grows with your child.

Teen Tales: Embrace The Braces Adventure

Teenagers and braces? They’re a match made in Smile Heaven! Starting treatment between ages 12 and 16 is often ideal. But don’t worry. We’ll make sure your teen is in on the fun!

Teenagers are often in growth spurts, which can be harnessed in orthodontic treatment. It’s like catching a wave at the perfect moment. Dr. McGrogan can work with this natural growth to achieve the desired alignment more efficiently. Straighter teeth help harmonize your teen’s entire facial structure. And the best part? It often means shorter treatment times!

Remember when choosing a favorite color was the coolest thing ever? Well, with braces, teens get to do that all over again! The options are as diverse as your teen’s personality. We stock traditional metal braces with colorful bands. We’ve also got nearly invisible clear aligners. At Shine Orthodontics, we make braces a shared adventure filled with fun, friends, and fabulous smiles. It’s about expressing individuality and embracing the process.

Looking for a great place to get braces? Dr. McGrogan and our Shine Orthodontics team can help! So, what’s the best age for braces?

A straight smile can boost self-worth and confidence during a critical time of personal development. It’s more than just a pretty smile; it’s about feeling great about oneself. Whether posing for prom pictures or laughing with friends, a confident smile can make all the difference.

Many teens get braces around the same age, which becomes a shared experience with friends. It’s like being part of an exclusive club. Everyone’s on the same journey to a dazzling smile. This can make the process more enjoyable and less isolating. Plus, with our friendly team and vibrant office, every visit feels like a catch-up with friends.

At Shine Orthodontics, we understand that being a teenager is about discovery, growth, and self-expression. We’re here to make the braces journey a memorable and positive chapter in your teen’s life. Ready to embrace the braces adventure? Let’s make it a tall teen tale to remember!

Never Too Late: Adult Smiles That Shine

Under the impression that braces are just for kids and teens? Think again! At Shine Orthodontics, we believe a smart, spunky smile has no age limit. Whether you’re stepping into orthodontics for the first time or revisiting it later in life, we’re here to cheer you on.

Your smile is your greeting to the world, and it’s never too late to make it shine. From traditional braces to sleek Invisalign, we’ve got options to suit your lifestyle and preferences. It’s about enhancing your natural beauty and letting your personality shine through your smile.

Aligned teeth aren’t just about aesthetics; they’re about health, too. Misaligned teeth can lead to problems like uneven wear and an increased risk of gum disease. Braces help align the teeth, making them easier to care for and promoting oral health. It’s like giving your smile a fresh start, paving the way for years of healthy, happy grins.

Adult orthodontic treatment is as unique as you are. At Shine Orthodontics, we tailor the treatment to your needs and goals. Whether you’re looking for a subtle adjustment or a complete transformation, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Age is just a number, and a sparkling smile is timeless.

A sparkling smile can make a positive impression in professional settings. Whether networking, meeting clients, or simply enjoying daily interactions, a great smile can be an asset. It’s not just about looking good; it’s about feeling confident and making connections.

At Shine Orthodontics, we celebrate smiles of all ages. We’re here to make the process comfortable, enjoyable, and entirely about you. Ready to make your smile shine? It’s never too late to start, and we can’t wait to be part of your arsenal!

Two-Phase Treatment

Picture a quest that starts in the tender years of childhood and leads to a treasure trove of radiant smiles that last a lifetime. This quest isn’t your typical fairy tale; it’s a real-life adventure that unfolds in the world of orthodontics. It’s a journey that transforms your child’s teeth, boosts their confidence, enhances their health, and improves their quality of life. Parents all over the greater Holly Springs area know where to find gems like these – and that place is Shine Orthodontics.

So, grab your explorer’s hat, fasten your seatbelts, and get ready to dive into the exciting world of two-phase orthodontic treatment. Let’s set sail on this smile safari guided by the experienced and passionate Dr. McGrogan. It’s time to discover the magic of orthodontics and the wonders it can do for your child’s smile!

The Two-Phase Tango: The Rhythm of Dental Development

Two-phase orthodontic treatment works like a flow of choreography! Its purpose is to show your child’s teeth the proper position to hold. It also leads their jaw through the appropriate stages of growth and development. It’s a dance that might be necessary if your child’s teeth are stepping on each other’s toes (crowding) or if their jaw is out of sync with the rhythm of their growth. This two-part performance ensures every tooth finds its place in the spotlight, contributing to a show-stopping smile that lasts the rest of their lives.

The Two-Phase Trek: A Journey in Two Stages

Two-phase treatment is like a two-part adventure, each stage offering its own unique challenges and rewards.

The first phase, or as we like to call it, “the interceptive expedition,” typically begins when your child still has a mix of primary (baby) and permanent (adult) teeth, around the age of 6 to 10. This phase is all about tackling big problems early, like jaw growth issues, severe crowding, or harmful oral habits. It’s like clearing the path for the rest of the journey.

The second phase, or “the alignment adventure,” kicks off once most permanent teeth erupt, usually between the ages of 11 to 15. This stage ensures each tooth finds its perfect spot in the mouth for optimal function and aesthetics. Between these two phases, we have a resting period. Consider it a pit stop, allowing the remaining permanent teeth to emerge naturally.

Two-Phase Treatment

Bask In A Bevy Of Benefits of Two-Phase Treatment

Like any great adventure, the two-phase treatment journey offers several significant benefits that can impact your child’s oral health and overall well-being. Here are the seven wonders of the two-phase treatment:

The Prevention Pyramid

Early intervention can prevent various potential dental issues, like severe crowding or harmful oral habits.

The Jaw Development Jungle

The first phase of treatment guides the growth of the jaw, helping it accommodate all permanent teeth and function properly.

The Aesthetic Oasis

The two-phase treatment enhances facial symmetry and balance, contributing to an attractive smile and boosting your child’s self-esteem.

The Shorter Second Phase Savannah

By addressing significant issues early, the first phase simplifies the second phase of treatment.

The Stability Summit

The two-phase treatment aims to create a harmonious relationship between the teeth and jaws, leading to a stable and balanced bite.

The Oral Health Ocean

Straight teeth are easier to clean. That reduces your child’s risk of cavities and gum disease.

The Overall Health Horizon

By improving oral health, two-phase treatment can contribute to better overall health.

It’s a big word with a simple goal – to ensure that teeth develop in a way that’s aesthetically pleasing but also strong and functional.

Why Should I Trust Dr. McGrogan’s Experience?

When discussing what makes someone an orthodontist, we’re talking about someone who has gone above and beyond in the dental world. Just like our very own Dr. McGrogan! Her title includes a DMD and MS.

The DMD symbolizes her prowess in general dentistry, earned after years of dental school. But she didn’t stop there. Dr. McGrogan took a leap further and pursued an MS degree. This extra badge of honor is a testament to her specialized training in orthodontics, diving deep into the art and science of aligning teeth and jaws.

So, an orthodontist is more than just a dentist; they’re a smile specialist. And with Dr. McGrogan’s expertise, you can trust that your smile is in the best hands at Shine Orthodontics. She’s here to help your smile reach its fullest potential.

How Long Will The Doctor’s Treatment Last?

How long will you or your kids be in treatment? We understand you’re eager to achieve that stunning smile as soon as humanly possible. At Shine Orthodontics, we’re all about making your journey effective without compromising on the warm and friendly atmosphere we’re known for.

Now, how long does orthodontic treatment take? Well, it varies from person to person based on factors like the complexity of your case and the specific treatment option you choose. Rest assured, during your initial consultation with our fantastic team, led by Dr. McGrogan, we’ll provide a personalized treatment plan and clearly tell you how long your orthodontic journey might take.

So, while we can only give an exact timeframe by evaluating your unique situation, trust that we’ll do everything we can to make your orthodontic treatment efficient, enjoyable, and, most importantly, worth the wait. Get ready to show off that gorgeous smile sooner than you think!

At What Age Should My Kids Have Their First Visit?

Determining the right time for your child’s first orthodontist visit can seem tricky. However, the American Association of Orthodontists (along with Dr. McGrogan) recommends a check-up by age 7. Even though your child’s teeth might appear straight, there could be underlying issues with jaw growth and emerging teeth. So, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Aside from age, watch for signs that your child may need an orthodontic check-up. These could include difficulty chewing or biting, thumb sucking beyond age 5, crowded or misplaced teeth, or jaws that pop or shift. At Shine Orthodontics, we help guide your child’s teeth to a dazzling future.

Why can’t somebody make an orthodontic FAQ that isn’t overwhelming? Dr. McGrogan, of Holly Springs, answers all of your questions here.

What Can I Eat With Braces?

When it comes to the ‘braces diet,’ aka the list of things you can and can’t eat while braces are on, we like to focus on the positives. While it’s true that you will miss out on a few things during your treatment with braces, the list of foods you can enjoy is so long that you will hardly miss a thing! Having braces is a great opportunity to get creative, try new foods, and get some practice cooking things you never have before. Who knows, maybe you’ll find some of your new favorites while wearing braces!

At Shine Orthodontics, Dr. McGrogan and her team are available and ready to support you on every step of your treatment, including what you eat! Follow along for this detailed guide on how to eat with braces, but if you have more specific questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch. The best part about getting braces with us is having an entire team behind you, cheering you on!

What To Avoid During Treatment

Let’s just get the negative stuff over with, right? Because it is true–you will have to avoid some food while wearing braces. More than types of foods, think about textures–crunchy, hard, sticky, or chewy are all things you will need to avoid for the most part. Cutting up some foods into small pieces can help to make them easier to chew, and generally, you want to avoid biting or tearing with your front teeth and instead focus on grinding food with your molars.

This means opting out of caramel, taffy, and other sticky candy, crunchy fruits and veggies, ice, gum, bagels and pizza crusts, and chewy cuts of meat. You will also need to avoid chips, pretzels, nuts, and other crunchy snacks. Remember, this is only for a limited time, and soon you’ll be back to eating all your favorite things with some shiny, straight teeth to show for it!

First Getting Braces

The hardest part is always the beginning, right? I think most patients would agree that it is true about braces! Getting braces on for the first time will typically mean some soreness and sensitivity and will likely mean eating some soft and simple foods for a few days until they start feeling better. We recommend mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soups, yogurt, and bananas. You can also take some aspirin and apply cold compresses to help speed up the adjustment process!

Keep in mind that your teeth might be sensitive to temperature as well as texture. Avoid super hot or cold things like ice cream, and you may also want to pass on spicy things and citrus that have acid compounds in them. These can aggravate your already sensitive teeth. You can enjoy those items in a few more days!

The Best Foods To Keep Your Smile Healthy

Now we are getting to the good part! There are so many healthy and delicious foods for you to enjoy during treatment, there’s no reason not to explore! Here are some of our top favorites: for dairy we recommend cottage cheese and other soft cheeses, ice cream, pudding, yogurt, milk, and so many more dairy products that are great for teeth health! For meats and proteins, focus on softer things like lunch meat, meatloaf, meatballs, shredded chicken, fish, and eggs. When it comes to fruits, veggies, and grains try to eat rice, beans, steamed veggies, applesauce, grapes, watermelon, and the like. And don’t forget things like casseroles, pb&j, grilled cheese, soups, and other non-crunchy snacks!

Cooking For Braces

As we have said time and time again, your main goal is to avoid the super chewy or crunchy stuff, and that stays true while you are cooking. Dr. McGrogan recommends removing meat from the bone and slicing up any chewy cuts so that it’s easy to bite and chew without pulling on your braces. Steam or saute veggies until they are tender, and cut up sandwiches and bread into smaller bites too.

Think About Your Drinks

We don’t want to skip the drinks! For the most part, what you drink won’t have a huge impact on your braces, but it can impact your teeth if you aren’t cautious! Sugary sodas, juices, and sports drinks coat your teeth in sugar, encouraging plaque growth. Because it’s more difficult to scrub all the nooks and crannies of your smile with braces, that means plaque can sometimes grow into tooth decay and cavities! You can prevent this by drinking sugary drinks in moderation and scrubbing your smile well morning and night, as well as using floss every day!

Don’t Forget the Sweets!

The same warning above goes for desserts! They are perfectly fine to eat in moderation, but you want to watch out for how they may end up impacting your teeth in the long run. During treatment, you can moderately enjoy soft baked goods like cookies, brownies, cakes, and pastries, as well as ice cream, chocolate, marshmallows, and more!

How to Fix Your Bite With Orthodontics

If you’ve ever experienced jaw pain while chewing or talking, there’s a chance you might have a problem with your bite. Bite issues are no small matter as they can cause pain and other serious problems. Thankfully, you can find a solution at Shine Orthodontics

Our office in Holly Springs is a place where patients have been coming for years to find the perfect solution to their challenging orthodontic problems. Dr. McGrogan is a board-certified orthodontist who uses her expertise to help improve the life and health of all of her patients through dedicated and precise orthodontic care.

If you are ready to learn more about how your bite impacts your life, then keep reading!

What Causes Bite Problems?

There are a few common causes of bite problems, starting with genetics, facial structure, and injury, all of which are completely uncontrollable. Another cause can sometimes be myofunctional habits that we pick up as infants or children like bottle feeding, mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, and thumb sucking. Typically these behaviors are fairly difficult to control as well, making them challenging to avoid.

Regardless of the reason for the bite problem, it’s important to have it treated as soon as possible. This is why Dr. McGrogan often recommends that patients bring in their children at around seven years old to be evaluated. This can help stop bite issues before they even start, or treat them while children are young and their bones are growing. All in all, it doesn’t matter as much when you come in for treatment, and just that you do get treatment at all! Don’t hesitate just because you’ve dealt with bite issues for years already. It’s time to solve your problems now to save you more headaches in the future

What Do We Mean by Bite Problems?

There are a few different kinds of bites that can create problems for your oral health:

Crossbite

When the lower jaw is longer than the size and length of the upper jaw.

Overbite

When the upper teeth stick out farther than the lower teeth.

Open Bite

When the upper and lower teeth do not connect when you bite down.

Underbite

When the lower teeth stick out past the upper teeth when you bite.

Overcrowded

When there is not enough space along the jaw for all of your teeth, causing them to crowd together.

Misplaced Midline Bite

When the center of your upper teeth does not match the center of your lower teeth.

What Problems Can Bite Issues Cause?

Difficulty Chewing

As most of us know, chewing is pretty important. For one thing, when we chew, we encourage saliva production which then helps with digestion. Chewing also breaks up food particles into small enough pieces to be digested more easily. Swallowing larger bites of food because your bite doesn’t allow you to chew well can result in digestion problems. Your body can’t absorb the nutrients from foods, and they can slow down the entire digestive system resulting in uncomfortable symptoms like indigestion, bloating, gas, and constipation.

Difficulty Breathing

People who tend to breathe through their mouth rather than their nose may not notice or feel like their jaw could be a part of the problem. But jaw issues can lead to narrowed nasal passages, making it more difficult to breathe through the nose and causing snoring, sleep apnea, and dry mouth.

Jaw and Facial Pain

Pain in the jaw and mouth from stress to the muscles of the jaw can be chronic and debilitating in some cases. For people who notice slight recurring pain, we recommend coming into our office to deal with the problem sooner rather than later because TMJ pain often gets worse over time. It can even start to radiate down the neck and to the shoulders when not dealt with appropriately.

Communication Issues

Things like lisps and other speech impediments can sometimes develop due to misaligned bite.

Wearing Down Teeth

Healthy teeth have a layer of enamel on them that helps to protect them while biting and chewing. When this layer gets worn away because of a bite problem, the teeth clash together and wear down the enamel. This means that the tooth is now exposed to the environment and becomes sensitive to temperature, and can even decay or get infected. Ultimately, tooth loss is possible when the enamel is not cared for or is worn away.

Treatment for Jaw Problems

Despite the grim outcomes that we shared above, there are some practical and doable treatment options! Shine Orthodontics is ready to treat people in the Holly Springs area to help improve their confidence and their quality of life through aligned teeth and healthy bites.

Traditional Braces

Braces are often the first line of defense when it comes to jaw or bite problems. Metal braces are well known as the most effective shifting force for tough cases, and paired with other devices like palatal expanders or rubber bands, they are your best bet for getting your jaw in great shape.

Clear Braces

Clear braces are another great choice for an adult who needs jaw alignment support but is concerned about the appearance of braces. These braces are made entirely out of  tooth-colored ceramic so that they blend in with your smile seamlessly, all while giving you the jaw-shifting power that you need.

Invisalign

Invisalign retainers are not always the right choice for someone who is dealing with jaw or bite issues, but if the problems are only mild to medium in severity, they can actually be a great choice. We love how convenient they are to use, and are nearly invisible while worn. Definitely speak to Dr. McGrogan about Invisalign to see if they are a good option in your case, or if you need braces instead.

The Benefits of Seeing an Orthodontist In Your Local Community

If you’re reading this page, it’s probably because you’re considering orthodontics for a straighter and healthier smile! Welcome! Many of our patients start out by researching online to see what options might exist. When you find our page, the chances are good that you’ve also come upon some online retailers that promise amazing results at the cheapest possible price.

We know it might be tempting to opt for what appears to be a cheaper and more convenient option than going to a local office like Shine Orthodontics, but we think there’s another way to look at things. Cheap and convenient don’t always equal safe, secure, and healthy. We would choose the latter any day, and that’s what we offer our patients here at Shine Orthodontics.

Keep reading to learn more about what we offer that the online competitors don’t!

Multiple Treatment Options

It seems almost too obvious to say out loud, but just because one treatment works for one patient, that doesn’t mean it’s the best choice for everyone. It all depends upon your unique oral health needs, as well as your lifestyle and personal preference! Check out a few of the options we provide at Shine Orthodontics:

Braces

Braces are an amazing choice for many patients who want the convenience of never losing or misplacing their treatment device, and for those that have more severe bite, alignment, or tooth problems. Braces work efficiently to align teeth and are the best choice when it comes to correcting even the most challenging cases. Plus, there are options for braces now! Some people like the less expensive and straightforward metal braces and others opt for the discreet and nearly invisible ceramic braces that are tooth-colored and blend into your smile. In addition, Shine Orthodontics is the only office in Holly Springs and the surrounding area to offer Iconix Braces. These braces are a soft gold color and are becoming very popular! Whichever you choose, you can’t go wrong with braces!

Invisalign

Invisalign treatment has become a super popular choice for patients in recent years, and for good reason! They are easy to wear and care for, require little maintenance or support, and are practically invisible! These clear plastic aligners fit over your teeth and are changed out every week or two to slowly shift teeth into a healthier alignment. We recommend them to patients who are responsible enough to wear them at all times aside from when eating and drinking, as well as store them safely to keep them from getting lost!

Personalized Financing

Finances are as unique to each family as oral needs are to each patient! That’s why we take an individual approach to pay for your orthodontic care. We work with each person to set up a payment plan that works for your budget, with the aim of making it possible for as many people as possible to access the orthodontic treatment they need. We also work with most major insurance companies in North Carolina, so be sure to check out your insurance options as well. Feel free to give us a call with any questions or concerns about the financial aspects of your treatment.

The Customer Care You Deserve

Don’t settle for feeling like just another number on a spreadsheet. At Shine Orthodontics, you are not just a number, but a beloved patient and soon-to-be friend! We love getting to know our patients over the months and years of your treatment, and we feel like each person who comes through our doors deserves to feel special and supported according to their needs.

Get Care From a Board-Certified Orthodontist

Expertise matters when it comes to your oral health. Ordering aligners online from a company that simply prints and sends them is not only unwise, but it can also be unsafe for your teeth! A doctor like Dr. McGrogan needs to evaluate the teeth, gums, and jaws in order to understand everything that is happening beneath the surface. This will sometimes include x-rays and other imaging tools, to ensure that every step of your process is safe. Sometimes if you attempt to shift teeth without considering all the factors, it can result in serious problems like tooth loss. Don’t risk it! Go for a local orthodontist who can guide your health throughout the process!

Support a Local Business

Last but not least, always remember that your local orthodontist’s office is a part of your local community! Shine Orthodontics is proud to care for patients in Holly Springs and the surrounding areas, and it is thanks to our patients that we are open and able to care for more people who need help with their dental health!

Shopping and supporting local businesses in one of the hallmarks of healthy communities, so we hope you choose local when it comes to your health, too. We are so grateful for patients who choose to keep their money at home, bolster our local economy, and make oral health accessible to more people!

Why Cleaning and Caring for a Retainer is important

Chances are, if you’ve landed here, you’ve recently gotten yourself a retainer. So, you’ve fought the good fight, you’ve finished the race, and your braces are off! Woo-hoo!

Of course, now that your braces are off, that doesn’t mean your role is finished when it comes to keeping that newly-crafted smile gleaming. That’s right – it’s time to talk about how to take care of your retainer. Don’t worry, though. Dr. McGrogan and everyone here at Shine Orthodontics wants to set you up for success. That’s why we’ve come up with this little guide on how to take care of your retainer. This reading will fill you in on all the reasons why cleaning and caring for your retainer is important, so let’s get started!

Background Info On Your Retainer.

Since your retainer will be in your mouth most of the day for at least the first four months after your braces come off (hint, hint!), there is plenty of time for harmful bacteria and the leftover food particles that can lead to the plaque to accumulate. Dr. McGrogan can give you specific directions, but one thing’s for sure – you’ll want to clean your retainer daily. A good time for this is at the same time you brush your teeth.

Cleaning Your Retainer.

Depending on your specific retainer type, your cleaning procedure may vary slightly. The three types of retainers are as follows:

Fixed retainers

While less common than removable retainers, a fixed option can take a lot of the pressure off since you won’t have to worry about forgetting to wear them!

Your fixed retainer works by being glued to the back or “lingual” side of the front teeth. Generally, a stainless steel wire is used to keep your teeth from relapsing to their old positions. If using a fixed retainer, be sure to brush and floss diligently in the space surrounding the wire, as the little nooks and crannies make it a favorite spot for plaque and debris! It’s important to angle your brush to reach the space behind your fixed retainer. Always brush thoroughly, but not so aggressively that you damage the wire!

Even though it can present a bit of a challenge at first, it’s vital to floss regularly with your fixed retainer. Waterpiks or a floss threader can be a great tool to make it easier on you while ensuring a deep clean. It’s a good idea to avoid or moderate certain foods that can damage a fixed retainer, such as crunchy or sticky snacks, and keep up with regular dental visits to keep plaque and cavities under control.

Be sure and come to Dr. McGrogan with any questions!

Why Cleaning and Caring for a Retainer is importantHawley retainers

These may be what comes to mind when you think of retainers.

Kept in place by a wire that wraps around the teeth, combined with an acrylic arch that rests against the roof of the mouth, the Hawley Retainer is removable. This makes cleaning a more straightforward prospect.

Be sure to clean your Hawley Retainer daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to remove plaque and bacteria. Your removable retainer should always stay in its case when not in use. Go ahead and remove your retainer before eating and drinking. This simplifies clean-up and ensures your retainer stays hygienic and fresh!

Essix retainers

A newer option, and one that grows increasingly popular with dentists and orthodontists each year, the Essex Retainer is similar to clear aligners like Invisalign. Like Invisalign, they mold to the shape of your teeth. Also, like Invisalign, they’re a breeze to clean! Just pop them out before your morning and nightly brush sessions, being sure to dry them immediately, so saliva doesn’t have a chance to accrue. Then, you can brush your retainer right alongside your teeth!

You can mix mild dish soap with water for an occasional deeper clean and periodically soak your Essix retainer in a specially-formulated solution such as Efferdent and Polident.

Be sure and keep good track of your Essix. Just like a Hawley retainer, since you can remove it, you can lose it! It’s vital to always store your retainer in its case when not in use.

Here are a few rapid-fire tips to remember:

  • If using a fixed retainer, be sure to brush and floss diligently in the space surrounding the wire, as the little nooks and crannies make it a favorite spot for plaque and debris!
  • Your removable retainer should always stay in its case when not in use.
  • Go ahead and remove your retainer before eating and drinking. This simplifies clean-up and ensures your retainer stays hygienic and fresh!
  • Cleaning your removable retainer is a cinch! Lightly brush and rinse with water. You can clean your retainer at the same time as you brush your teeth to keep things simple. Occasionally, you’ll want your retainer to soak in a fluid designed for a deeper clean.
  • Be sure and avoid leaving your retainer in extreme heat, as this can warp the acrylic of a Hawley or the plastic of an Essix retainer. You should be removing your retainer to eat and drink anyway, but that goes double for hot food and drink.
  • Bring your retainer in with you when you come and see us so Dr. McGrogan can ensure that it’s in good order and that your post-active treatment is on track!
